SECURITIP™ ACCESSORY Tech ID: 06-93-90
The Securitip™ accessory protects an endoscope or other
medical device from being punctured by a needle or other sharp tool while in
use. The unique component of Securitip™
is a jaw-like gate that prevents the tool from being deployed prematurely as it
is advanced down an endoscope. In the
closed position, the gate retains the tool within the protective catheter. In the open position, the gate does not
interfere with the operation of the tool.
Securitip™ can be manufactured to fit existing or new
endoscopes as a disposable or a reusable accessory. Though originally designed for endoscopes,
this accessory can be used with any medical device that consists of a catheter
or cannula
that slides within a larger tube.
Background:
Endoscopes typically have an insertion tube with a
biopsy channel that is inserted into a patient's body cavity. Once the endoscope is positioned correctly,
an endoscopic tool is passed through the biopsy channel to allow the physician
to visualize a tissue, take a biopsy sample, perform a therapeutic procedure,
measure the pH, etc.
A major expense associated with endoscopes is their repair
when an endoscopic tool punctures the biopsy channel. This occurs when the endoscopic tool
prematurely slips out of the catheter as it advances through the biopsy
channel.On occasion, the tool itself
may be damaged.
Advantages of Securitip™:
- reduces damage and costly repairs to endoscopes
- prevents damage to delicate tools such as pH electrodes and fiber optic devices
- can be retrofitted for existing endoscopic catheters
- can be manufactured to be disposable or reusable
- is adaptable to a variety of medical devices
